Engraving of King George IV and Queen Caroline by Lewis Marks, from the collections of William H. Helfand and Jack Gumpert Wasserman. The King and Queen are in court dress which is made to reveal their bodies both suggesting their sexual indiscretions and their indulgence in corporeal pleasures. Permission to reproduce print granted by Jack Gumpert Wasserman. See The End of an English Royal Marriage! George IV and the Trial of Queen Caroline for Adulterous Intercourse: An Exhibition from the Collections of William H. Helfand and Jack Gumpert Wasserman, January 22 - March 21, 1997. The Tea Party, c. 1821 by Henry Sargent
Left: Promenade Dress with Pelisse. The pelisse is dark-violet velvet with French cuffs. The shawl is cashmere and is cream with pink and yellow rows of designs upon it. The muff is ermine. The collar is a lace ruff. The bonnet is violet velvet lined with white satin and trimmed with violet-colored ostrich plumes.
Center: Court Dress. White ostrich plumes drape over a diamond bandeau over this gold and white court dress. The gold satin robe is trimmed with gold shells. The white satin petticoat has white lace over it and rows of folds in the satin rimmed with gold cord.
Right: Evening Dress
Morning Dress. This is another of my favorite dress, one I particularly covet and can imagine how wonderful it would feel. The entire dress is made of pale pink cashmere. Imagine the cost of such a dress today, when a simple sweater of cashmere can cost hundreds of dollars! The dress wraps around the body and ties with matching bows. The cap is a cornette of lace and net and ties with a matching pink ribbon. The lady sits drinking her morning coffee or tea, in no doubt, the most comfortable dress she owns.
Women's Redingote,
1821. The crpe hat is trimmed with braided satin and banded with satin folds.
