Formal Papers
1. Students will write three formal papers of no less than 750 words and no more than 1,400.
2. All papers must be typed or computer-printed and follow the rules of the MLA style sheet.
3. In each paper, students will write an analysis of one or more of the assigned readings that significantly increases our understanding of the text. Students must show they have used higher-level thinking to approach the text. No research is required. Students must write on a minimum of three texts.
4. Poor writing and thinking are related, and grades will reflect this connection. A significant number of careless errors (more than three errors per page) will lower a grade.
5. Extensions may be requested and will be granted under certain circumstances. Papers that are late due to an emergency will not be penalized. A student who has not turned in a paper five days after the due date will receive a grade of "F" for that paper. Papers one to five days late will have their grades lowered.

Due Dates for Formal Papers: Tuesday February 12
Tuesday March 5
Tuesday April 23
Midterm Exam: Thursday March 7
Final Exam: Thursday May 9, time 3:30 to 6:30
The final grade will be based on participation in classroom discussion and the grades of exams, formal papers, and other assignments.
