Texts: Intelligence Applied, Robert J. Sternberg
The Taming of the Shrew, William Shakespeare
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Arthur Conan Doyle

In "Writing and Thinking" we will analyze short stories, drama, films, arguments, and advertisements. During several classes, we will practice writing essays and giving oral reports. Time will also be spent doing exercises testing our knowledge of grammar, our ability to revise prose, and other intellectual skills. We will write a few in-class essays and seven short essays using rhetorical methods. The term paper will use many of these rhetorical methods and will be written in stages. We will learn to use the library not only to research our term papers, but to do many other projects as well.

Due to the large number of papers we will write in this course, any assignment not turned in by the class following the due date will receive a grade of "F." Every assignment turned in late will have its grade reduced by 2/3 of a letter grade. For personal emergencies extensions will be granted in proportion to the seriousness of each case.

Note the dates of the in-class essays, oral reports, quizzes, and revision test. If you miss these classes you will fail these assignments. If you know you must be absent or absolutely cannot be there, make arrangements with me before the date to fulfill the assignment in another way.
