Notes from my reading diary, April 1995: A lady lives alone with adopted children rescued from assorted social evils. She was a dowd in her first season. The hero kisses her from a wager. He later tries to help her not get thrown out of her neighborhood and falls for her. His fiance, who he doesn't love, runs away and ends up with the heroine. There is a fortune teller and spell-obsessed girl; the cook is also into spells. A fun read.
