Notes from my reading diary, Spring-Summer 1992: "The heroine is 16 years old and the hero 12 years older. She is forceful and a manager; she throws mice in a room to get her sister to faint. The villain is evil but not too evil; he wants to marry for money. The scene at the church tower where the young brother fakes ghosts to hide astronomy is amusing. A fine read."

---. The Bishop's Daughter. NY: Fawcett Crest, 1990.

---. The Wooing of Miss Masters. NY: Fawcett Crest, 1991.
Notes from my reading diary, April, 1992: "This is an excellent novel. The nearsighted, aggressive, book-lover fears love due to her mom being a [slut ?]. The duke is sick of women who throw themselves at him and thinks Miss Masters will do this. They fall in love. Ivanhoe used in plot. The hero picks out books for the heroine and frees a fox for her. He protects her and is very romantic."

---. Lady Dearborn's Debut. NY: Fawcett Crest, 1986.

---. Miss Cayley's Unicorn. NY: Fawcett Crest, 1988.
Notes from my reading diary, 11/22/1991: "Chater tries for the Chesney style but is a bit too harsh. The heroine in this novel is abused."

Chernier, Blanche. Regency Row. Greenwich, CT: Fawcett Crest, 1978.

---. Summer Masquerade. Greenwich, CT: Fawcett Crest, 1978.
Notes from my reading diary, December, 1994: "This is most likely Chernier's second book after her Regency Row, which I also read. The two have similar court information about fighting in the royal family, which can often be a bit dull. The heroine is infatuated with a lord that has terrible judgement and is a social climber. She gradually falls out of love with him. She has good girlfriends. She is impulsive and is rescued by [masked hero? ...] evil, money-grubbing villainess ruins hero and tries to kill heroine. The heroine has a sweet maturity. I'd like it more if the villains were less villainess. There is some rather surprizing sexual desire hinted at."

---. A Lady of Fortune. Coventry Romances 25. NY: Fawcett Coventry, 1980.

---. Lucinda. Harlequin Regency Romance 19. NY: Harlequin, 1990.

Cheshire, Chloe. [Laura Amy Schlitz] A Gypsy at Almack's. NY: Harper, 1993.

Marion Chesney. Henrietta. [previously published under name Ann Fairfax]. 1979. NY: St. Martin's P, 1989.

[Marion Chesney also writes as M.C. Beaton, Helen Crampton, Ann Fairfax, Jennie Tremaine, and Charlotte Ward]

---. My Dear Duchess. NY: Signet, 1979.

---. The Marquis Takes a Bride. 1980. NY: Signet, 1987.

---. Regency Gold. Coventry Romances 15. NY: Fawcett Coventry, 1980.
Notes from my reading diary, Feb. 4, 1992: "For Chesney, a long book, and this has too much in it. The poor Scottish lass goes to the ball, gets invited to London, makes social gaffs all the time, is secretly an heiress, and has an uncle who is a fortune hunter trying to kill her. The hero tries to prevent the murder and half the time chases her and half the time chases another woman. [...] She holds the footman's hand by mistake due to belladonna in her eyes and tries to act like a fallen woman by rouging her nipples which makes the hero laugh at her. Her overpaid vails [tips] to the servants cause a rumor she is an heiress."
Later Comments: This novel squeezes so much in to so little: Scotland, the beach resorts, regency make up, regency food, murder, etc. I have to confess the bit about the heroine and her experiments with rouging her breasts was one of the more memorable scenes.

---. Lady Margery's Intrigue. 1980. NY: Fawcett Crest, 1988.

---. The Miser of Mayfair. 1986. A House for the Season 1. [set in 1807] NY: St. Martin's P, 1987.
Notes from my reading diary, April, 1992: "I liked Fiona [the heroine] acting dumb but being actually brilliant. I enjoyed how the heroine uses the drapes to make clothes and wins her money by cheating. She also predicts her assault. The supporting cast is great."

---. Plain Jane. 1986. A House for the Season 2. [set in 1808]
Notes from my reading diary, April, 1992: "The plot involves an annoying mom and some drunken parties. This novel is very funny." NY: St. Martin's P, 1987.

---. The Wicked Godmother. A House for the Season 3. [set in 1809] NY: St. Martin's P, 1987.

---. At the Sign of the Golden Pineapple. NY: Fawcett Crest, 1987.

---. Lessons in Love. NY: Fawcett Crest, 1987.
Notes from my reading diary, Jan. 28, 1992: "Another abusive childhood novel, this time with a serial killer grandmother. Too dark for me, but a quick, short Chesney read."

---. The Scandalous Lady Wright. NY: Fawcett Crest, 1990.

---. His Lordship's Pleasure. NY: Fawcett Crest, 1991.

---. The Scandalous Marriage. NY: Fawcett Crest, 1992.
Notes from my reading diary, April, 1992: "A vulgar, pushy mom tries to marry the heroine's sister to a Duke. The Duke tries to marry her. She flees to be a servant. There is much coverage of an overworked servant's life. She flees because the hero didn't say he loved her. The plot involves some women sexually messed up before the wedding. There is also some silly stuff about a Black Mass."

---. Emily Goes to Exeter. The Travelling Matchmaker 1. NY: SMP, 1990.

---. Belinda Goes to Bath. The Travelling Matchmaker 2. NY: SMP, 1991.
Notes from my reading diary, Feb. 9, 1992: "A good, short, typical Chesney yarn packed with vivid period detail and original, interesting characters. A clever ending spreads happiness all around."

---. Beatrice Goes to Brighton. The Travelling Matchmaker 4. NY: SMP, 1991.

---. Yvonne Goes to York. The Travelling Matchmaker 6. NY: SMP.

---. Susannah's Secret. NY: Jove, 1993.

Clark, Gail. The Baroness of Bow Street. Cotillion Regency Romance 1. NY: Pocket Books, 1979.
This is a fun little romance and mystery all in one. The heroine is memorable for her experimental hair coloring.

Clark, Norma Lee. Cupid's Calendar. NY: Signet.

---. The Daring Duchess. NY: Signet.

---. The Impulsive Miss Pymbroke. NY: Signet.

---. The Infamous Rake. NY: Signet.

---. Mallory. NY: Fawcett Crest, 1978.

---. Emily. NY: Fawcett Crest, 1979.

Clary, Sydney Ann. The Duchess and the Devil. NY: Zebra Books, 1988.
Notes from my reading diary, February 2, 1992: "The only other novel I've read by Clary is a Harlequin and a pretty racy one for Harlequin. This one borders on ridiculous porn with its heroine riding the hero like a wild stallion and screaming in ecstasy at their joint orgasms. The characters have way too many talents, and the plot is highly improbably. I don't think the heroine should have like the hero anyway; he deserved to be cuckolded, and I didn't believe in his reformation."

---. Misfit Match. Harlequin Regency Romance 13. NY: Harlequin, 1989. [see comments on Clary's The Duchess and the Devil]

Clay, Marilyn. Bewitching Lord Winterton. NY: Zebra.

---. Brighton Beauty. NY: Zebra, 1996.

---. The Headstrong Heart. NY: Zebra, 1999.

Coleman, Patricia. Daring Deceptions. [set in 1804] NY: Fawcett Crest, 1990.
Notes from my reading diary, April 1992: "This is the typical new-heir-tries-to-kill-other- heirs plot. The hero is an undercover agent. The hero and heroine are forced to marry to inherit. The novel is well done however and has both good sexual tension and a good bit about the 1804ish break in the war with France. There is an ok escape scene. It is an original blend of cliches."

Comstock, Mary Chase. An Impetuous Miss. NY: Zebra, 1993.

---. A Midsummer's Magic. NY: Zebra, 1994.
Comments from my reading diary, March/April 1995:This is a fun, fun story of real magic, of kids vs. a villain. The main couple is older. There are spells, magic, and romance.
Later Comment: I've reread this book, and its pleasure is not diminished the second time. A fun fantasy that has enough dark edges to have punch and not enough to detract from the farcical mood.

---. A Sparkling Affair. NY: Zebra.

---. Fortune's Mistress. NY: Zebra, 1996.

---. Love Unmasked. Caroline Courtney 3. NY: Warner Books, 1979.

---. Guardian of the Heart. Caroline Courtney 4. NY: Warner Books, 1979.
Notes from my reading diary, Spring 1992: "This novel is set in France, partly before the revolution in the time of wide skirts and men in colors with swords. The plot involves the guardian and a fellow rake competing for the heroine, with the guardian trying to deny his love. This is very similar to Joan Wolf's Catalina. There are lettres de cachet and the Prince de Condé in the plot. The hero is in many ways truly a jerk."

---. Dangerous Engagement. Caroline Courtney 5. NY: Warner Books, 1979.

---. The Fortunes of Love. Caroline Courtney 6. NY: Warner Books, 1980.

---. Love's Masquerade. Caroline Courtney 7. NY: Warner Books, 1980.

---. Crossed Hearts. NY: Zebra, 1993.

Cunliffe, Corinna. Play of Hearts. NY: Signet.

---. Hand of Fortune. NY: Signet, 1985.

Curling, Audrey. A Quarter of the Moon. [set in 1794] NY: Popular Library, 1978.

Curzon, Lucia. The Chadbourne Luck. Second Chance at Love 3. NY: Jove, 1981.
Notes from my reading diary, Nov. 1994: "A woman lives with her actress sister and falls for a guy who falls for her. An evil friend (it is never clear why) breaks it up. The heroine is ill, gets white-streaked hair, marries, is widowed nine years later and meets her old love again. A rape attempt brings the lovers together."

---. An Adverse Alliance. Second Chance at Love 33. NY: Berkley/Jove, 1982.
Notes from my reading diary, Nov. 1994: "A dowd marries an earl and then when he breaks off sex and runs away due to his dead first wife, she leaves him. She joins a theatrical aunt and becomes a star. A Marquis courts her and wants her to get an annulment. When her husband is dying from a duel, she realizes who she loves."

---. The Queen of Hearts. Second Chance at Love 87. NY: Berkley/Jove, 1982.
Notes from my reading diary, Dec. 1994: "A young woman elopes with a lover who cruelly rapes her and tells her he married for money and kills [someone's] dad. He dies and left a note he loved an opera singer and did this for his and her son. The woman grows up and exposes [some] scum who is sent to debtor's prison. The hero is [someone's] brother and sleeps with the heroine in a storm. He calls her cruel names, but the opera mistress defends the heroine. There is good sexual tension, but I don't think the hero was worth what she went through."
