Mary Balogh. A Chance Encounter. NY: Signet, 1985.
A General Note on Mary Balogh: Expect SEX! The more recent the novel, the more likely it is to have lots of explicit, intense sex in it. Very hot and heavy novels, but typically the novels praise conventional and religious morals (church, family, babies, cooking, homemaking, etc.). Of course, lots of sordid vice is covered along the way. Sex aside, Balogh can create very individual, unique, vibrant characters. Many of her novels are immensely funny. Some are very dark, scary, and tragic. She has a great range of moods and tones.

This is a fun book about a rather sexually free heroine who is a governess. The plot takes place
at a large house party on a big estate with convenient sea caves, cottages, etc.

---. A Certain Magic. NY: Signet, 1991.
---. The Ideal Wife. NY: Signet, 1991.
---. The Secret Pearl. NY: Signet, 1991.
This is pretty intense--the heroine is starving and takes up prostitution for one client only (the
hero) who is married with children. Amazingly, the novel recoups from this sordid start to be quite
romantic.

---.
Dancing With Clara. [sequel to Courting Julia] NY: Signet, 1993.
Notes from
my reading diary of April, 1995: The hero marries a crippled heiress for her money while she
marries him for sex and his good looks. The marriage is a lovely masquerade until she tells him she
know he married her for her money. Things then go badly; the novel is bitter sweet, but Balogh
manages to make the novel overcome the dark aspects of the plot.
---. Deceived. NY: Onyx, 1993.
---. A Precious Jewel. [the heroine is a prostitute; this is pretty intense] NY: Signet, 1993.
---.
Dark
Angel. NY: Signet, 1994.
Notes from my reading diary of April, 1995: The heroine
is going to marry a guy in an arranged marriage, but she falls for the hero instead. Her jerky finance
arranges that she seem ruined, so they must marry. Love triumphs.

Barbour, Anne.
A
Pressing Engagement. NY: Signet, 1992. [no reviews at this site yet]
Notes from my reading diary, Feb. 1995: French heroine at inn drugged by evil relative; the hero
thinks she is a drunk doxy but she is taken in by him rather than sent to jail during
robbery/kidnapping escapade. She is forced to play his fiance for a dying guardian or dad. The
heroine's brother shows up who is a gorgeous acrobat and falls in love with the hero's sister. Fun
chaos ensues.

Blake, Karen. A Question of Honor. [set in 1816]
Coventry Romances 116. NY: Fawcett Coventry, 1981. [Christmas Tale]
Comments from my reading diary, December 1994: Opens at Christmas and is incorrect about
Christmas trees and 18-century Christmas customs. The whole romance is spun out over years and
consists of only a handful of encounters that could fit into two weeks or a month. The opening is
nice and shows good promise. Lady Emily, the friend, is a nice, interesting character. The major
problem is the implausibility of the couple loving and staying alienated. Text is fine, sweet, and
nice. There are no villains and interesting couples, but the book is a "no brainer" and has a
hackneyed plot.

Comments from my reading diary, March/April 1995: An admiral gets swave hero to teach awkward
girl how to dress and match her house and to be a social success. The rival to the hero is a selfish,
money-grubbing, insipid poet. The novel is fun.
