Aylmer, Janet. Darcy's Story. Bath, UK:
Copperfield Books, 1996.
authors are Joan Aiken, Therese Alderton, Paula Allardyce, Sheila Rosalynd Allen,
Barbara Allister, Linell Anston, Evelyn Anthony, Caroline Arnett, Helen Ashfield,
Jane Ashford, Rebecca Ashley, Mollie Anston, and Janet Aylmer
This book is set in the country and draws on research about old British
country traditions and rituals involving Easter week. I found it enjoyable and sweet.
The heroine of this novel is near-sighted and has trouble remembering names. Much of the comedy
revolving around this is a bit forced. Unlike most "Signet Super Regencies," this one was not full
of sex. It was enjoyable.
I really enjoyed this book a lot: passionate Russians; war and political intrigue mixed with sex; an
abusive husband escaped and true love found ... short, tense, romantic!
Notes from my reading diary, April, 1995: "Dated but good--like Diana Dean's Russian-
French stories, only more pro-French in flavor; evil serf-killing wife-beating husband is villain,
dashing soldier is hero, and forced bride is heroine. Subplot of Russian shooting princess and her
love is sad; the ending is improbably but nice poetic justice."
This tale of three young ladies' loves was good. I liked the breaking up of the story into three plot
lines. I also enjoyed the feline character.
