This redingote and silk vest is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art (38.90.a; vest 38.90.b) The description in The Age of Napoleon: Costume from Revolution to Empire, 1789-1815., edited by Katell le Bourhis et al. (New York: Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1989) reads: "Man's double-breasted redingote (habit dégagé) and silk satin square vest, worn with silk twill breeches. French, c. 1796-98" (82). This two-tone gold coat is a much more pleasant combination of colors than the very similar green and gold striped French Frock Coat, c. 1793, also owned by the Met. If you compare the two, you can see the collar here is clearly higher, and the front is now in the "cut-away" style. The stripes are also wider. |
