Green Formal Velvet Suit, c. 1805-10

This oddly striped green velvet coat and vest can be dated by the unusual fabric. They are privately owned by Lillian Williams, a collector. Description in The Age of Napoleon: Costume from Revolution to Empire, 1789-1815., edited by Katell le Bourhis et al. (New York: Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1989) reads: "The new style in fabrics of the Empire, stimulated by improvements in looms and weaving and dyeing techniques, distinguish ... [this suit] from those of the Ancien Régime" (115). The suit is shown with "a linen shirt with muslin cravat" (115). The coat has four visible pockets, two on each side and two in the back. The many buttons which decorate the cuffs and coat are covered with the same uncut velvet This formal suit lacks the embroidery trim so common for court dress, but it would be appropriate for evening wear.
