Lady Byron's Pelisse, 1815

After her wedding to the famous Romantic poet, Lord Byron, in January 1815, Lady Byron wore this pelisse to go away in. The pelisse was a type of light overcoat fashionable at this time. It was cut on similar lines to the dress, a short waistline, long sleeves and a high neck.

This pelisse is made of a soft twilled silk called 'sarsenet' (often mentioned by Jane Austen in novels and letters of the same period). The coat is lined and then interlined with lambswool so it was probably warmer than it might appear.
